This was a fantastic place to visit. The beer was good, the food was unique. it was open and spacious. They have a small game area for kids too, which was neat. They have many beers that you can take home as well. The food was a little pricey for the small amount that you get. I wish there was a little more to choose from as well. Based on what the travel guides eluded to, we expected more meal options to be available. You could easily make a meal out of their offerings but it would be very pricey.

Excellent selection of craft beers. Great new location and good atmosphere. You can grab a table if you wish to have a more private conversation or sit at the bar to strike up a conversation with their friendly bartenders/fellow patrons. Trivia nights are very fun too.

I love this place for their great beers and cool vibe. When friends ask me where to go when visiting T.C., this is among the first of my recommendations. Definitely NOT North Peak. This place is original, with an ever-changing lineup of beers. I love that they offer local snacks too.

This was in a large industrial building off to the side of a residential area. A nice, easy 20 minute walk from our hotel downtown. The building looked pretty new and was nicely painted and done up inside. It was a large space, and made the bar at the far end look almost under-sized for such a large building inside. Interesting art hanging around added to the atmosphere. I had an IPA that was quite good, but didn't get a chance for another or to try something different, as one of my travelling buddies was jumpy to get to the AT&T store to try to repair his iPhone that mysteriously had stopped working.

Known for their "weird" experimental beers, Right Brain Brewery is also a very cool hangout place! I went there for the first time over the weekend while camping at the state park. I shouldn't have been surprised at how funky and eclectic the place is, given some of their more interesting beers. (Thai Peanut spicy stout, Belgian saison aged over cucumber and basil, and a cherry amber ale brewed with 30 whole cherry pies, just to name a few!) The space is just a big open warehouse, basically. There is original art from local artists all over the walls and inside. They have a HUGE selection of games to play, which I was super excited about. I saw a bunch of games I have been wanting to play. (and at $40+, it's nice to be able to try them out!) Unfortunately, with the massive amount of beer my friends and I ordered, there was no room for games! Next time. :) They also had a selection of free vending machine snacks that had recently expired. Bonus!! They do have a menu and full kitchen, so next time, I'm definitely going to get a waffle sandwich! As I mentioned, my friends and I all got flights... which was probably overkill! You get 6, 6-oz pours! These are the biggest flights I've ever seen. Of course, premium beers are a buck or two extra. Totally worth it though. We had a great time tasting all the beers and hanging out in such a cool space. A couple of my friends commented on the lack of music, which I didn't even notice. There is a jukebox, though. This is one of the coolest breweries I've ever been to, and I've been to many! (I also live in Grand Rapids: Beer City, USA!) I can't wait to go back.

10 stars for the beer, 4 for the food and atmosphere. Kind of hard to find but anyone with a smartphone can manage. I understand that breweries & taprooms are loud but this place is crazy loud. I had to yell just to get anyone to understand me. Food tasted great, only wish portions were slightly larger considering the price. My wife and I both had a waffle sandwich. We were going to split one as we normally do at pubs but I'm glad we didn't considering the size of them.

Very cool place. Definitely check it out if you're in TC and looking for a good drink selection. We stopped in on a pub crawl in the area and right brain tied for first for me out of all the spots (jolly pumpkin was also tied for first). Pluses for right brain are selection, eclectic atmosphere, the staff, and the location relative to the jolly pumpkin. I had the berry mead which was a great chance up after pint after pint. We went on a Monday during the day and it was still fairly busy. I'd love to see the crowd on a Friday or Saturday night. I'm sure the neighbors love them! We tried the hummus that had mint and jalapeño which was actually really tasty. Also grabbed a white cheddar popcorn and I was surprised at how flavorful it was. I am not a popcorn lover and I couldn't help but keep grabbing more to shove in. The only downside was we tried to buy one of the take away gift packs for my bro that couldn't make the trip. We were given two different menus to choose from and I would say 75% of what we chose was not available. At one point we joked and asked if these were menus of what they don't have versus what they do have. All in all though a great spot and I can't wait to return. Definitely give it a look.

Definitely worth a stop in simply to experience the eclectic changing beer menu. The brew-master makes up to 12 new beers every 2-4 weeks with extremely interesting ingredients. Tried their Wicked Garden Wheat, which was bright pink due to the sugar beets used in it and also tried an extremely refreshing ale with flavors of asparagus and lemon peel. Their pints are extremely well-priced so you can have a few of your favorite, or you can try a sampler to get the most of a visit. Bar staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

Fellow Yelpers Rachel & Kyle found this place and I'm glad we went. It's a funky 'lil brewery with some tasty beer options. Just note, they do not serve food, you can however bring in any food you want to eat there. There's darts, board games and seats aplenty. Bar stuff is very friendly too!

Great place! Can't wait to see their new location. They have a great, laidback vibe that is needed in Traverse City with all of the "fancier" places. They have an excellent selection. They are not afraid to try new things and put themselves on the cutting edge. They do allow you to bring in food from outside. Don't know if they will continue that in their new spot. You feel like you're part of a larger community of real, craft beer lovers here. And what's not to like about that!

  • Erin Q.

PB and J on a waffle?? Yes, please. This place is super cool. But, I immediately felt welcomed. You order at the bar area and take your goodies to the table. I am not a big beer drinker, so I was happy to see they had other local bevvies on the menu, such as a local mead. It was delish! There was a giant group for a crawl that came in and they were experts at getting them their beer so they could move on to the next stop. Met one of the owners and he was so nice. A definite must on your trip to TC. Just note, it's off the beaten path if you plan on walking from downtown, it's roughly 1.5 miles.

Awesome lay out. Great place to just hang with a group. Very solid beers. The beet saison was freaking delicious. Im giving this place 4 stars because $7 for chips and salsa. I mean, ok great you use local ingredients and make it fresh, but $7?? Drop it down to $5... you'll still make money in sure. Ate the waffle corn beef... it ruined me damn it. All sandwiches should on waffles. WAFFLE ON!!

  • Mary Ann M.

Love the waffle sandwiches!! The turkey guacamole is my favorite. And of course the beer is great too. I have tried the Blue Magic and the Sweety Drop.

Amazing right brained art with right brained beer. Travelers, Don't miss this destination! Just had their double IPA. It's pretty much the bomb. Not smooth, bitter... Just the way I like it!!

I love what Right Brain Brewery is doing! They are experimenting, getting a little (okay a lot!) funky, and creating some great tastes. I only wish we had more time on our short trip through town to drink more beer.

We tried a new brewery in the TC area and my wife was disappointed in the beers. Her best suggestion of the night: go to Right Brain. We have visited this location nearly a dozen times on different trips to TC. Right brain has knowledgeable and pleasant staff and they always have a wide selection of top quality beers. On this trip, I had a flight of all darker beers, but they also have excellent selections for hop lovers. IMG_0631.jpeg I love: (all best directly from the source, still amazingly good from draft at a spot near you that knows their beers) Barrel aged fat lad Delicious dark robust smooth chocolate imperial stout. Took a growler with me. Barrel aged looping owl Smooth barrel aged oaky vanilla caramel flavor. The Mangalitsa Pig Porter Smokey and piggy porter. Thick and delicious. CEO stout Espresso chocolate coffee. Exceptional. Also very good: Smokey CEO stout (smokey to cover the coffee) Firestarter chipotle porter (smokey liquid smoke smooth) This brewery is on a higher level than most other breweries in Michigan (which are very good). I can easily find a half dozen beers at this brewery that are better than any beer at other breweries down the street. The construction reconstruction vibe for the building is unique and comfortable the seat yourself vibe is relaxing and welcoming. Don't be fooled if the place looks closed from the outside. Tucked neatly behind a trendy salon this brewery is my absolute favorite. Stop in and find out how many beers can find a spot on your favorite beers list. IMG_9944.jpeg

Been coming here for a couple years, kids love it for the arcade games, i like it for the beer. Awesome flights and always many beers on tap, never tried any food here, but definitely a great place for a good craft beer and relaxing environment.

  • Doug B.

in the words of Mick Jagger, I can't get no Satisfaction. They are out of it tonight. Still, I like all my selections. The Dead Kettle is a bit too much grapefruit after a couple of sips, but the Cubby Squirrel and Flying Squirrel make up for it, as does the CEO Stout and Northern Hawk Owl. Is there such a bird as a Northern Hawk Owl? Hummus was good. They were out of burgers before 9, so get here early.

  • Ron R.

This place was pretty awesome, it is definitely one of those "don't judge a book by its cover" type of places. The outside of the brewery looks quite ghetto and dnaky but then u step inside and the environment is perfect in its own weird kind of way. They had alot of graphics on the wall, weird structures inside it was really nice to see this, then we had food there and I had the jalapeño burger and the cool thing about the burger is that they use waffles as the bun and it made the burger that much more delicious. We then had a flight each and my flight wasn't too bad, I had an Asparagus beer which was weird but actually tasted really well, then a Chipotle porter which had some spice to the beer and it was well worth the drink then there was a pig porter which wasn't that harsh of a porter it was a smooth taste, very well, then the flying squirrel which was a dark amber ale was quite good but the hefe cubano was not a good hefe. All in all the flight was pretty good. It is definitely a worthy brewery to add to our brewery bucket list.

This brewery takes the cake when it comes to getting unique and one-of-a-kind beers in Traverse City. We biked here after reading the reviews on Yelp, although it is 16 blocks off the main drag in more of a residential area, it was well worth it. The place is super eclectic featuring all sorts of artwork on the walls, chairs and tables that vary in sizes, shapes, colors, and decades of production. They have an old school juke box too. The only food they have related to waffles and variations off of that, which all looked really good yet we already ate. Opting for the flights after we were told you get 6 six ounce flights (usually only 4 oz at other places) for $15. They do limited you on their limited production beers yet you can pay an extra dollar per extra limited release beer. We ended up trying all different types of beer, getting some 4 packs, some bombers, and a growler from them on top of getting some shirts for friends and family back home. The beers we sampled were very unique that I've never had anywhere else. One was a Thai Peanut beer, Basil and Cucumber Saison, Chery Pie beer, and then the variations of more crowd pleasing beers. The waitress was super helpful and when we told her we were touring around trying out different breweries she ended up bringing a few more samplers (not in the big glasses) for us to try out. This is a must check out if you're in TC - just know that is unique and truly an artistic and awesome place.

It's a kind of cool environment but the beer is not great... It's a unique environment and the service was great! You can get 6 samples for $15 and they are large samples!

Have had this beer at the last few MI Brewers Guild Beerfest, and finally made it to their brewery today. We got the nickel tour (Tim Hoffman was great!) and their operation is impressive and poised for expansion. These are true beer lovers. Their beer is not only great, but creative. Who puts a pig in their beer? A pig. Right Brain rivals is more well know competitors who better watch out.

In Northern Michigan I have to say Right Brain is second in quality for Beer . Outstanding quality and Flavor . Spinal Tapper is in my top 5 favorites of all time beers . Every time we come to Traverse City we stop in for a pint and a growler to take home. The Major problem I have with Right Brain is their Tap room , they still act like brewing beer is a hobby and not a business . I was hoping a few years back when they moved locations , they would expand their tap room area . Which they did but concrete walls with Crap scattered about shows they do not care about their customers who buy and drink their product. Right Brain needs to watch what their customer base will move on . New microbrews are opening Dailey in Michigan and could push these Guys out of business.

Great brewery in Traverse City. It is quirky and edgy and cool! You would expect this type of place in a more hipster city! Its off the main drag, in a more residential area of town so at first we didnt even think we were going the right way! Finally, we stumbled upon the parking lot and sighed in relief that we had made it - we were on foot after all. Chicagoans thinking every city is a walking city. The room is filled with mis-matched chairs, sofas, hospital bed looking chairs, etc. Quite cool! We decided to share a flight and we enjoyed all of our beers! Our waitress was awesome and made some great recommendations. I wish we would have done a tour. All the sandwiches are uniquely made with a waffle bun, but we opted for the guac, which was pretty good! If you're looking for a fun spot - I highly recommend checking this spot out! It was fun and the beers were good.

I love beer, and I love using my right brain but I have to be honest, the customer service here (at least when we visited) was a letdown. We were not greeted though there were at least 7 people working (not a busy day), and it even almost felt awkward? Our waitress seemed cold, and was looked miserable to be working there. We proceeded to order nonetheless. The beers were wonderful; they were perfect even. The cherry soda that they made was very tart, but something I would recommend to anybody dropping by simply because you're in TC and it's pumped full of cherries. I'll swing by here again next year in hopes that we see a smile or two.

Very eclectic and funky new brewery off the beaten path (literally) in Traverse. Some of the most interesting brews I've seen at a microbrewery, and well worth a trip if you're in the area. Apple/Cherry Pie Whole are brews that are brewed with actual, whole pies. What??? I tried the cherry and it was literally like sipping on a pie, crust and all. So funky but actually very well balanced and well done. Many others from which to choose, but like I said, there's something for everyone. Their menu looks fantastic with some amazing sounding waffle sandwiches that made me really sad we had already eaten lunch elsewhere (go Fridays or Saturdays for waffle burger night!) Service was less than exciting, but nothing off-putting. I'm sure with the live music and revolving beer menu, if we were closer, we'd be there way more often.

If you love microbrews, then you have to hit right brain. The atmosphere reminds me of a chic warehouse. The beer is very good! The food is good as a tasty snack. I had the waffle burger which is exactly what it sounds like: a burger with waffles for the bun! I wish the waffle had been crispier but the flavor was yummy. They are only $5 but they are small. Staff is friendly and they have games for the table (like jenga!) and that adds to the atmosphere.

We were fortunate enough to go on a tour of this facility. The place is great. We were given some wonderful samples and were shown around by a knowledgeable staffer, who gave us loads of information and answered all of our questions. It's always interesting to discover the philosophy of such establishments and Right Brain was no exception. Apparently, they are in the vanguard of the canning trend now going throughout the industry. They are also planning on expanding their production at time goes and have adjusted their facility accordingly. The tap room itself is a funky industrial blend with just about any type of seating one can imagine. The bar is well set up and the staff is wonderful. The only thing I suggest is that some sound attenuation be installed, as I am guessing it gets really loud in there with all the hard surfaces. They used to be in a downtown location, but are now in a more neighborhood setting. We were all impressed by the beer being offered with several outstanding selections. The food, I believe, should be expanded via a wider menu. We would all love to revisit.

You can get your haircut here.. FYI. A little hard to find but once you get there it's well worth it. It's a very different crowd. A bit of an eclectic place. Wide range of beer options from peanut butter to chocolate. Bartender was nice to talk to. Visit.

    (4)
  • Annie H.

The beers are excellent. That said, the food is extremely small portions and not all that good. The service was intermittent, with one sourpuss dude who didn't take Customer Service 101. Come on, hipster attitude won't float a company for all that long. Enjoy the beer, but make sure to dine somewhere else!

  • Peter J.

RBB has a great beer selection and tasty grub, the pig porter is the best meat infused creation I have ever had and the guacamole is made fresh daily. Highly recommended!

So far my favorite brewery I have visit in Traverse and there are a ton of them around there. From the actual beer they put out to the space, it's great in there. They have some great flavors that are always on tap and a line-up of super unique fun ones they rotate through to try. When we had it we thought the Spear Beer (asparagus) was really odd, but then found ourselves craving it later on. If you have't been before a flight is the way to go so you get to work through a handful of their choices.

    (5)
  • Keith W.

Great times and great beers. I got a flight of the IPA's and most of them were a hit. The ambiance is great and a live band was setting up. There is a ton of seating both indoors and out. The look and feel is just a lot of fun; I can't wait to go back!

  • Beth O.

Stopped for a beer because I had heard great things about it. Here's my advice: are you a very well-versed beer connoisseur? Then this place is for you. Not a beer aficionado? Don't bother. The staff didn't seem to want to help or guide those who are not well-versed in beer. I did try their sour beer and it was great but don't think I would go back because of the lack of engagement with customers. Their cheese board was meh.

    (2)
  • Matt M.

The only reason I'm not giving this place five stars is because I didn't have enough time (or a DD) to try more than one beer at the brewery. I had the Spinal Crusher, which was excellent. I sipped my fiance's Sour Owl and thought it was pretty good, but not very sour. We took a growler of the Irish Goodbye back to our vacation spot and found it to be very easy to drink and quite tasty. I've had other brews by them in the past, and was happy to get a chance to visit the brewery, even if only for a short while. They make good beer. The brewery is in a cool building next to some railroad tracks in a section of town far from the touristy schlock of the downtown area. It is pretty big on the inside but still feels comfortable. There is a lot of very cool artwork, both permanent and what appeared to be a rotational show. They have a slew of interesting beers, a beer nerd could spend all day there and not get bored. I will spend more time there in the future and not get bored.

Visited again while on vacation in July on our own Microbrew tour. This a much different atmosphere for a brewery. It's eclectic and I would call the unofficial tag line as, "where you can drink with your kids until 9 pm". (Not knocking that, it just may turn some ppl off). So you may see some kids nicely playing board games, drinking root beer w/ their hipster-ish parents. This is the place I'll come once a yr, not that I'd be a regular. But that's me. I'd recommend the sampler. Since I'm a wheat/pilsner fan Cakewalk was my fav. Hubby liked Firestarter (smoked chipotle.) and recommends bc it is not like a beer you can get elsewhere. Since others made a thing about the prices, I thought $15 for a sampler and &5.25 for classic beers are reasonable. That is pretty typical pricing in my hometown, but maybe not for everyone.

  • Scott M.

Beer was good. Food and service poor. Bartender NEVER came back to ask us how we were doing. He took our food baskets and never made eye contact--even as we said thank you--as if he deliberately tried to avoid us. Overheard he will soon be moving to Cleveland; so long! It was the barback that closed our tab. The waffle sandwichs are forgettable. I had the Ham-n-Gouda with tomato aioli. The waffle was made to order--and therefore warm--yet the ham was cold! I didn't taste the gouda or aioli. The waffle sandwiched are small, think of two finger sandwiches. Not worth the $7.

Had a server on the patio that fetched our drinks and food. Most beers were $5 & food around $7. We tried the amber amd golden - both had good flavor. Loved the tall boy cans it came in (pint glasses also available). Good vibe, random location... a good stop.

Love this place! Laid back atmosphere where all are welcome (kids). My kids enjoy the video games and fancy pop while my husband and I can enjoy a great beer and snacks

    (5)
  • Liza V.

I tried and tried to talk myself into giving this place a higher rating. I really did enjoy the unique atmosphere they have going on here. It was fun to see the kids running around hula hooping, building with blocks, and playing video games. It's a great place to bring a big group, because they have a crap-ton of space! But ultimately, what I came here for was beer, and I was so under-impressed. Our goal was to come and try their beers in order to find a couple we liked, and take back a few growlers to the lake to drink for the week. First off, you can't get samples of the "premium" brews. Ok, fine, I understand. But then, most of the signature and classic brews had signs next to them saying No Growlers. Booooooo. We decided on six samples, and there was not a single one that I wanted more of. Nothing stood out. I was thoroughly disappointed.

Loved this place! The decorations are so random, it literally looks like they went to a thrift store said Ill take whatever you can sit on and just put it in the store! So original! Staff was really nice, and they had a large selection of beer. I like that they give you a little taste if you ask before you get a whole pint, a lot of places get stingy and snotty about that! Beer was probably best in TC! Def recommend this place and def coming back next time we are in TC!

*This review was originally written Summer of 2012, for some reason, my Yelp just posted it. I've since had a good experience meeting with Russ (Summer 2013 - unfortunately, all I remember is talking to Russ) and hope to return this year for another flight that will allow me revise my review.* Had a flight of five beers: Von Trapp CEO Stout Something Lavender Chubby Squirrel Vanilla Cream Ale Belgian Pale Without going into too much detail, I would say that the beers were all good, but none were especially memorable. My wife was only fond of the Chubby Squirrel, and even that was not her favorite beer of the evening.

Great atmosphere and even better beer. The CEO stout is outstanding. Next time I go I will try the food, but watching them prepare it and the aroma it seemed legit. Go get some beer people, treat yourself.

  • Holly G.

This place was a fun brewery to visit on our Michigan beer tour! They had some really funky sounding beers including the "Spear Beer" that we sampled which was an asparagus beer! Really, the thought of it sounds odd but it really was pretty tasty. A Pale Ale color, it would have paired really well with strong cheese. The rest of the beers we sampled were more in the vein of "normal" but you know, it is always fun to try unique beers too! The asparagus beer was certainly the most memorable! The space itself is quite large and kind of feels like an arcade or your cool best friend's basement from 1998. The staff was pretty friendly, but the tasters ran a tad steep in price so be prepared if you want to try everything they have in a taster-size.

If you like beer this is a place for you. If you are okay with drinking whatever beer is cheapest this isn't the place for you. They have diverse beer offerings. And the beer sampler is a nice way to try some beers you might not have thought about before.

  • Anna S.

What a cool place! It's not AT ALL what I expected, but I was really impressed and wished I could've spent more time here. The space looks like a converted warehouse space - super high ceilings, open rafters & ducts, and really brightly painted walls. There's local artwork all over the walls; some looked like local kids' artwork. There's play areas for kids and "big kids" alike - including darts, video games, board games and more. The bar is smaller and there are tables everywhere - hand-written info on the menu boards highlight the beer selections with descriptions. I found all the beer to be good and flavorful - accurately described on the boards and nothing was bland or boring. Highly recommend, would love to go back and play some more.

The atmosphere is super fun, as is the decor. The beer was outstanding and very unique. We ended up doing a double sampler (12 different beers), and we were not disappointed. We went home with 2 growlers and a bottle of the Pig Porter (which I would highly recommend, if you like something extra special and unique). Great place, great staff, great beer. You definitely get your money's worth at Right Brain. We'll be looking for their beer on the shelves from now on, and we'll definitely be back.

Awesome atmosphere! Super unique brewery to visit. However, we came in and none of the staff bothered to help us, say hello or anything. They also were out of the appetizers we ordered. Not sure if we will come back or not.

We were able to visit the new location this summer and it was great! We were very happy that there was a food menu this time around though the portions were quite small. My favorite brew was - I think it was called - Blue Magic, a beer brewed with lavender! Right Brain remains our favorite microbrew in Traverse and we will be back!

This brewery is so much fun! My boyfriend and I came here on one of our stops along a winery and brewery tour and were so impressed. We each got the tasting sampler (it's a lot, but you can definitely do it...we did). There are plenty of fun games like cornhole, darts, and arcade games. The growlers are cool-looking too, as well as all the art. Highly recommend it!

Loved this place. At first was a little harder to find since it was not very close to the main strip in Traverse City. The staff was super friendly, laid back, fun to talk to, and of course educated about their beers. The brewery was surprisingly large and would be great for large groups. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. Board and card games for something different to do while you sip on a beer. Every beer was amazing and they had a wide range of styles for every kind of beer drinker. From what I remember they had snacks and pre-made sandwiches that were actually very tasty. Great that I have been seeing Right Brain beers all over the Detroit area. Will for sure be stopping in again when in the TC area.

Would love to give a review on the beer, however, never had the opportunity to try any. We stopped in on a Friday afternoon at 3. There were 3 tables being served and maybe 4 people at the bar. Certainly not busy. We walked up to the bar, but decided to sit at a table instead. We watched 2 tables come in after us, get their orders taken and served, and still no acknowledgement. They were not short on help as I was able to count 5 employees working. After serving the table next to us, one gentleman thought it more important to stock the cooler behind the bar than to take our order. That's when my wife and I walked out. However, my wife liked the funky artwork and set up of the place.

Really, really liked the beer here! I wish this place was closer to the SE side of MI, because it is that good. The food menu is clearly lacking. But the beer completely makes up for it. GO HERE for good beer - Traverse City is a lucky spot with so much phenomenal craft brews around.

I love Right Brain. It wasn't a fancy place, but with good beer you don't need it. The staff was very friendly and let me try many of the beers. I was filling a growler and the keg blew. So while I was waiting of the keg to be changed they gave me a free beer on the house. The CEO Stout is one to write home about. Luckily they bottle it. Stop by or get a bottle.

Cool place... kinda like a community center with awesome beer. If you are looking for atmosphere, it's certainly unique and even has an attached hair salon. But ambiance wasn't important... very impressed with their beer quality. Especially liked Steve's Brown Ale... "bold and balls to the wall" -- their words not mine.

Cool brewery! Came in late one night to grab a last min beer before they closed. Quiet, chill place with an interesting decor! Liked the vibe and would come back!

I've recently decided that I'm much more of a brewery type of person rather than a winery type of person. I like walking into a brewery and smelling the malt and hops that lingers in the doorway. I like those moments spent looking over a whiteboard deciding which beer sounds tasty. And I love being able to order a flight of beer. It's simple instant gratification. I pick, I pay, you pour and we're off. For $15 I ordered six 6oz. glasses of very different styles of beer to sample. I took them back to my seat and enjoyed them without any swishing about in the glass or discussion about the growing season. I found Right Brain to be a great spot to enjoy a beer or six in this case. The layout is pretty open with a few quiet coveys in the corners and a slew of boardgames to play while you imbibe. Unfortunately there is no food but Xylo cafe is down the hall if you want to bring something in. The beer was very very good. I tried the Tina Beana, the Dead Kettle, the Bonaduce and a few others. A couple weren't for me while the majority I would purchase regularly if they were bottled. (You guys need to get on that.) RB is disguised a bit from the street as you wouldn't guess that there was a brewery housed inside the commercial building. Walk in, go past the salon and follow your nose. Pull up a stool and enjoy the chilled out ambiance or play some darts on one of their two cork boards. Either way it's a good spot to visit while in town. Remember to pick up a growler too.

Man, what a great place in TC. I was here for an afternoon right after Thanksgiving, and was impressed by their huge beer selection. I'm pretty sure I got a pale ale, which I was very happy with. The cost was maybe $3.50, which I thought was very reasonable for a craft beer. The place has a nice mish-mash of chairs, tables, games, etc. Friends were catching up, families were coming in, and everyone was enjoying the company. Not 100% sure, but I think you can bring in food. They might have some chips for sale behind the bar. Next time I'm in town, I'll definitely go back.

Right Brain is fun because in addition to some inventive beers they're also a really chill spot to hang out. I feel like it's more of a coffee shop than a bar and I like that about it. I mean, who wouldn't want to hang out at an awesome spot filled with loads of color and local art but instead of a mochachino you get a killer pint of Strawberry Fields, a honey blonde ale made with strawberries? Maybe it's because I've always been here during the day but Right Brain is just BRIGHT. I think that's what makes it seem less bar like to me. From the flashy colors painted all over the place, to the interesting art placed around by local artists and the awesome wall of mugs it just seems very un-bar like and I mean that in the best way possible. They don't have a ton by way of food but they do offer some fun snacks like pretzels, chips, popcorn, hummus, etc. If memory serves all the snacks they offer are made in and around Traverse City as well. Score! Like a beer and want to take it home? They've got growlers! Like a beer and visit often or live around town? Get a lifetime membership to their mug club and get discounts on growlers and mug refills. Hot dizzam! I just wish I were around more to take advantage of such an awesome deal on such tasty, tasty beers!

I've always heard nothing, but good things about Right Brain. Their beers are great and very creative, the atmosphere was laid back, but very fun so on and so forth. All that changed this past weekend when I visited Right Brain for the first time. All you notice when you first walk in is the void of seating and open space along with the "kids area." This was my first flag. Was I at a brewery or a Chuck E. Cheese? I don't know about other craft beer drinkers, but when I go to a tap room or brewery I don't want a majority of the patrons to be those under 9 years old. I want an adult atmosphere because well... I'm drinking beer! Right Brain has itself confused a little with a day care. There's more toys and entertainment for the kids than the adults. After making my way through all the children running everywhere I found myself trying to figure out where to order my beer and what I can order. Let me explain. They have 3 dry erase boards up. All their current beers on tap are designated into certain categories, standard, premium and whatever the other one was. Within those categories, some beers are bottle only, not available with flights and some you cant get a growler of. Fair enough to some extent. I know some breweries don't let you get growlers of beers that are over a certain alcohol percent and other have flight restrictions. The thing is that some of the "premium" beers were available for flights, but others were not, which... why are they even premium? The other convoluted piece of this process is that there is a spot to order from, but the bartenders were taking orders from other people who went up to the bar, which in most breweries is how you do it anyways. Again.. what's the point? After finally getting all the beers we could for the flight we found a table albeit close to the "play area." After going through the samples it's clear that the new brew master isn't quite as good as the old brew master. I've had a few of their beers when they were at their original location with their first brew master and those were amazing, this batch... not so much. The Cherry Pie (not available for growlers BTW), Norman IPA and Looping Owl were pretty good, but the other beers weren't. I am not sure if Right Brain had some sort of plan when the brew master left and they moved in to their new digs, but it clearly isn't a good one. Too many kids, too complicated of a ordering / to -go process and not a good enough line up. I was really excited to see this place and felt very let down. The one bright spot I can say is that the turkey and avocado sandwich on the waffle was pretty good, but not good enough for me to go back. Get your crap together Right Brain.

They do not serve food, but have some snacks. You can get little tastes of beer, but they are known for their large samplers where they offer several draws of many beers. I took and posted a pic of them. I give it high marks as a great place to hang out. I left off one star only because none of the beers they had that day really called to me.

Being an "out-of-towner" my wife and I wanted a fresh brew that wasn't domestic. So our Hotel recommended this place. This was such a laid back place with many delicious beer not only on tap, but in bottles as well. The selection range from any Ale to the darkest stout and if you can't decide, a sampler is available. The beer I tasted was delicious and refreshing. The staff were super friendly and they atmosphere was amazing. Lots of people around me were laughing and enjoying themselves while having some of the most flavorful brews around. One of the first thing I noticed while walking in was a giant TIE Fighter hanging from the selling. Being a fellow Star Wars nerd, I know this place was going to be awesome. They have cards, board games, and even a dollar operated jukebox that plays music. So if you don't like what's playing, you can always hit the jukebox. I recommend this place for anyone looking for a good atmosphere and have any size party to check out. Everything was great!

First, let me say that I enjoyed the IPA. It was some tasty brew. But I couldn't get over the huge "airplane hanger" or "school gym" type feel of the bar. I don't mind all of the games and artwork on the wall, and catering to families during lunch and dinner time is a plus in my book. However, the huge space just didn't work for me. Also, the Tigers were playing the night I came in and the place doesn't have any TV's. Maybe just have one or two screens for sports fans? It made me move on to another locations actually. Again, great beer. High marks for that. The place just didn't work for me though. Maybe add something or make changes to the layout? Get rid of the HUGE, OPEN space? Just my .02.

Huge fans of these guys. Never before have I encountered such a large number of beers (I got to sample about 15) along with such great quality (I was not a fan of the strawberry beer but the rest were either good or outstanding). What really did it for me was the inventiveness. A Thai Peanut beer? Beer infused with lavender? A Saison infused with cucumber and basil? Consider my mind blown!

I love wheat wines. If you are unfamiliar with them, they are beer-like but are not made with hops. In contrast, wheat beer is made with hops. I tried their 'wheat wine' at Hopcat in East Lansing. They apparently don't know the difference between adding hops and not adding hops, nor that a grain beverage can't be called a wine if you add hops. Disappointing.

The beer is great! We wish they had had more of a kitchen however. We would have stayed longer if they offered more food. But we were hungry so we had a couple of beers and moved on. There are a lot of breweries in TC so there are other options when hungry and thirsty. But we like the beer and it's big inside so maybe after dinner hanging out with friends would be a better choice next time.

I just got done visiting Right Brain for the second time. I visited there last year right after they moved to their new location. My boyfriend and I are both very big beer enthusiasts, and were looking for a place to relax on a Saturday afternoon. The Place: The feel of Right Brain is a little odd. It's all concrete, with metal or wood tables. There's no upholstery anywhere. The walls are covered in colorful and creative paintings that are actually pretty cool. They also had music playing at a reasonable volume. The last time we were there and this time, though, it was so large and empty you ended up feeling a little bit like you were in a museum or a gymnasium. It was cool, but it wasn't necessarily comfortable. The Beer: the beer is good, but not fantastic. I liked some of their IPAs (Spiny Norman was fantastic) and they had some creative, well-executed moments (I like Strawberry Fields a lot). Like I said, though, the beer was very good, but wasn't all-around amazing. The Food: They serve some small snacks (e.g., chips & salsa), as well as "waffle" sandwiches made with their beer. The food was good, but the portions were not anywhere near a meal, and I am a very small person. The Price: The pints there are a little expensive given that they brew them on the premises. In addition, the food was really pricey for the amount that you got ($7 for a sandwich with no side, and I was definitely hungry after). Finally, I was SHOCKED at the price of the flight or sampler. Six 6-oz. pours cost $15. For slightly over two pints, that comes out to almost $7/beer. For a brewery, that's quite expensive. I probably would not have minded, but the price of the sampler isn't listed anywhere on their menu. I know, I know--it's my fault for not asking, but I honestly didn't expect it to be anywhere near that much. Verdict? I liked Right Brain, but they lost me at the price. My boyfriend and I paid $50 in beer and food to leave hungry. I was pretty dissatisfied and my credit card hurts a little now.

No idea what their beer selection is like. We sat at a table for easily 10 minutes, possibly longer, while two employees chatted at the bar. Somewhat discouraged, I walked up to the bar and stood between them - listening to their wanna be intellectual conversation. Neither acknowledged me in the 3 or so minutes I stood RIGHT in-front and between them. Never even paused to make eye contact. Terrible experience. Looking forward to never trying whatever the beer has to offer. |updated review on 26OCT2012 below| Started out as one star... If it were in my power, I'd assign multiple negative stars to Right Brain Brewery. Based on several bullying, passive aggressive, unpleasant, likely drunkenness-induced contacts from their, um, "supporters" --- I'm convinced the owners/employees/regulars are simply a bunch of Traverse City Troglodytes. Keep the nasty messages coming folks. Making my case for me. Heck, if you make one good enough I'll update my review and paste it in there for other Yelpers to read.

I had read a lot of Yelp reviews before going to Right Brain, which was my first trip to Traverse City. Unless everyone is in agreement, then you really have to take Yelp reviews with a grain of salt. I have to say, Right Brain really disappointed me. I did like the vibe, the decor, and everything that made this place unique. I even like the weird windows looking into the hair salon. The staff was friendly. I'm from Chicago, a pricey town, so I didn't have a problem with the price of the beers, either. Now, the bad part. The entire reason for going: the beer. We tried five different beers and only one we "liked" was the one made with pig parts. It was flavor defect city. I have not smelled diacetyl that bad in beer in a long time, if ever. Diacetyl is the fake movie popcorn butter smell and taste you get in an improperly fermented beer. Some beers can mask that flavor with hops and a rich malt profile, but the smell was overpowering. Luckily, the nice staff took the beer back and allowed me to sample the beers before getting another. The beer really put a bad taste in my mouth.

From the staff to the microbrew - this place is fantastic! For any beer lovers visiting TC, stop by! Not only is the beer DELICIOUS, but the place is kid friendly (and not awkwardly kid friendly, if you know what I mean.) ;-) The only downside, which I don't think is high enough to take them down a star, is that their beer has officially blown out my palette. I can no longer enjoy sips of PBR or Miller Light like I used to. In the summer I love taking home a growler of their latest IPA - my favorite!

Awesome place! As I walked in it was exactly what i was comfortable with. Cool artwork on the walls, friendly people minding their own business--chatting, playing board games, doing their own thing. Took a seat at the bar and looked at a chalk board with all the selections they had on tap. Its really cool how all of their beer is brewed there, and from what I heard they always have a new selection every day or week i forget. I forgot the bartender's name but she was really friendly. I was in the mood for some brown ale as a starter and went with their Bitchin' Brown Ale which was really good. If you want variety though, go with the beer sampler thingy which gives you a chance to pick 6 different beers they have on tap for 15 bucks. This will definitely be a place I would come back to if I plan to travel to traverse city again!

Ugh, ugh, ugh. I MISS THIS PLACE SO MUCH. When I moved to Florida I realized what a great place I was leaving behind almost immediately. This is THE PLACE that started me on my beer path. Friendly, efficient, fun, comfy, inventive, the list goes on. To me this takes everything a relaxing evening should be and does it right. The menu is constantly changing, thankfully, giving the regulars and new comers something to experiment with each and every time. You can bring your own picnic, board games, whatever. I've had some of my favorite conversations, debates, rounds of Apples to Apples and beers of my life in this joint. I encourage everyone in the area to check it out and trust me I lead by example- vists home ALWAYS include at least a evening or two here for me.

"The Warehouse District." Genius. A local brewery in the Warehouse District- even better! I moved away from my lovely hometown for college in 2003 and have only been back in sprees- little did I know Traverse City gave names to their neighborhoods upon my return. Made me feel a little more San Francisco-esque. Anyway, I finally made it to Right Brain last fall, a place everyone seems to know and love. The beer selection, board games, and knowledgeable staff make Right Brain a spot I expect to return to when I make my way back to Traverse City. Even a city girl coming home to her roots is impressed by such a place! I heart beer along the bay.

Great beer selection...something for every beer drinker. Staff was friendly and fun. The offer brew tours at a reasonable price. Make sure you get your flight included as part of the tour instead of purchasing on your own. Only gripe...no food. They serve popcorn and pretzels and other small foods. I think you can bring your own food in and eat...but woulda loved to be able order from a menu. Oh well... Great beer...will definitly be back...

Great atmosphere. Much like the weather in Northern Michigan, if you don't like the tap selections that are currently rotating just wait a bit and The Brain will surely have thought up something new and different to put on tap. Really enjoy everything about Right Brain especially like the art, goods, and of course the Beer. I wish you well in the new location. ROLLER DERBY!

i love microbreweries and right brain brewery is 'right' on! their new location is in a large, open space with exposed cinder block walls, cool artwork and other things that make it a fun space. it was busy but not crowded (love seeing all the bicyclists there), and the day we went, it was quite hot. it's unfortunate that there wasn't more air circulation. although we didn't try them, they have a cool beer sampler flight on a long, curved tray.

Very trendy spot behind the warehouses near the lake. They had 14 beers on tap when I arrived and are always changing the beer menu, so I was told. Bring your own food is the motto here but they do sell snacks such as popcorn and tortilla chips. Hipsters and people in their 30's hang out here. Not a bad spot to chill in. I was by myself but quickly talked to locals. The bartender stated the Asparagus beer you guys have been talking about was brewed because someone asked them to brew it for the asparagus festival. I was told it wasn't a best-seller. I had a few beers at Right Brain. The CEO Espresso Stout has very strong roasted coffee flavor. 6% ABV. The "3-some": cinnamon vanilla chocolate beer aged in oak. 6% ABV. Sounds funny but the first taste tasted like soap. Certainly had a fruity flavor to it, especially the aftertaste. Cinnamon hints immediately. The Dead Kettle IPA was pretty awesome. But my favorite brew of the night was the 5-hop IPA. 5.8% abv

Great Beer. Fun People. Board Games. I like this place. It has a fun vibe--the entire staff in & out of the tasting room really has it goin on. The comradery of this place makes it worth the happy hour line up to bring that brew to your lips. I appreciate the variety they have from season to season--featuring cherry brew, variety of 'wet-hopped' brews, and my personal fave of the summer, 'strawberry fields' mmmm! You can go for happy hour for reduced price pints--which is easier on the wallet, and it's bustling(!) I can't wait until they begin bottling and selling at local markets in TC and eventually expanding nationwide. These folks got some mega talent. XO, RBB!

With an ever-changing beer menu, chill environment (do people say "chill" anymore?), dozens of board games, eclectic tunes, and friendly staff and management, you're hard pressed not to have an enjoyable pint or two at Right Brain. Traverse Brewing's former brewmaster John Niedemeyer (sp?) has really spread his wings and formulated some quality brews. A HUGE variety and sure to please many palates. I only wish I lived within biking distance. NOTE: You can order in or bring your own food and nibbles. Bo-NUS!

Came recommended by hotel staff, so I checked it out. So glad I did. Happened to get there just in time to get Happy Hour prices ($3/pint), and fell in love with my first sip. Wonderful, chill atmosphere, friendly people, delicious and creative beers. This is my new favorite brewery, besting Dogfish Head. Only wish I could get their beer back home in NYC. Be sure to catch Happy Hour every day from 3-6.

I think all the raving about their beer might be a *tad* over done on these reviews- just my opinion of course. But most of them are good and I do believe that it is without a doubt the most unique brews you will ever find. We always make a point to stop here when we're on that side of town. If I asked you to describe to me with your minds eye what the typical brewery looked like, you'd probably used words like brick, dark wood, brass- and odds are we'd have the same image. This is nothing like what Right Brain looks like - it's artsy, informal, and definitely unique. There aren't any TVs, just board games, some darts, and that's about it. This place is about people, not distractions. I've seen all types of people in here and everyone usually seems to be having fun. There's no food, just snacks. And the bartenders are happy to give you samples or explanations of all their bizarre beers. It's off the touristy strip, which is a nice break from kids, families, and bustle that accompanies most of the places on nice summer days in the area. I can't remember how we found out about it a few years back, but my g/f and I have had some great times there. About the only disappointing feature that is common to a lot of breweries is that due to small batches, there is no guarantee you're going to get your favorite beer. The selection varies quite a bit, and while that's all part of the adventure, there seems to be no guarantee you can ever get the same thing twice... ever. But I've never seen a brewery quite this inconsistent, so that's preventing me from giving it the full 5 stars. Also- another bit of a disappointment- I think it's only open until 12am on the weekends which has cut the fun short on more than one occasion (not sure of the hours during the week),. Don't quote me on the exact hours in either case. And though it will never happen in it's current format, it would be nice if they could do a little something more in terms of food beyond bags of pretzels or popcorn to go with all that heavy beer. But clearly the focus is on the drink here, so I will respect that. A final word of caution: There are some really daring beers on this menu, which is what I love about the place. Very unique. But that being said, I probably only like about half of them, and some I absolutely hate (no question, you'll find some you consider stinkers, too). You won't like them all, and hopefully you'll be there at a time when they have more beers available that are your style.

This is the kind of place that you want to make a tradition of going to. The beer itself is almost always good, and the constantly rotating taps means you can try something new every time. The vibe is very laid back and you know that everyone around you is a fellow beer lover. The lack of food is not a problem, because you can just order something in. If this place was in my home town, I would be there multiple times a week.

I'm not a self-proclaimed beer aficionado. I just like a good beer. I had heard great things about Right Brain, so I had to check it our while up in TC for vacation. It was a little difficult to find, but it was well worth the search. The ambiance is wonderful. Beautiful artwork - the bb butterfly is the best. Quirkiness abound. People playing board games. People playing darts. People smiling and laughing. Everyone is happy there, so it's not a place to sit in a dark corner and drink away your problems. : ) It's too happy of a place for that. We had the Strawberry Fields beer. Yummmmmmmo! But they switch up their beers all the time, so you have to go there often to get a true taste of what they have. Too bad I live so far away. We'll definitely be making a visit there next time we hit TC as well. Yum!

A location that is off the beaten path makes the Right Brain Brewery a most enjoyable destination. Sat in the outdoor seating about 3pm and watched person after person arrive with their empty growler & leave with a full one. Staff was friendly and attentive. Struck up several conversations with other outside patrons as the atmosphere is one of a local bar.

Atmosphere is cool enough. Lots of games to play and random kinds of chairs to sit in. The merchandise is cool and the bartenders were nice, down to earth guys (as any brewery family member should be). We got a sampler and their flight board is the coolest I've seen (and I promise I've seen a lot!). 3 stars because the beer wasn't anything special for my taste. Just so-so for me.

The beer is not good. It hasn't been good, ever. This is the typical overrated crunchy/fixed gear type place that doesn't stand up to the hype. The place is cool and there used to (may still) be a restaurant attached. The beer is just soooo bad. I know I'm not alone in this assessment. It's not just that it isn't good, the beer is bad. Rank after-taste. It's honestly a step below North Peak's beer and can't hold a candle to other microbrews from Michigan.

My friends and I love coming here for our girls night! We've done pizza, birthday parties, etc. It's an awesome relaxed environment and the girls (and guys sometimes) behind the bar are fantastic! I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of beer and sometimes I can't find anything that works for me, so I love that they have Wild Bill's soda as well! The Ned Flanders is my favorite.

The Right Brain has some of the best and most creative beers in the state. Now if we could only convince the brewer that Cask Conditioned beer should be served at cellar temp and not room temp, things would even be better. Those who are knocking the beer on this list should stick with a nice white zin...

On our way to spend the weekend in Traverse City, this was our first stop. We simply could not wait. This might just be my absolute favorite brewery - NAY! *bar* on Earth. And y'all know how much I love Founders, right? Yeah. Y'all know. Ahem.. Right Brain is so electic and seems to be filled with awesome people & beer. And it's kid-friendly! Homemade sodas & board games abound. You can really tell this bar offered OddSide Ales advice when they were starting up. They have the same coffee bar aesthetic, design your own mug, and keep their menu to just snack foods but customers are encouraged to bring their own from home or neighboring business. I should also mention the alluring aroma this place exudes. It smells like grain, yeast, hops all around this building. It smells...Like quality Michigan beer-making. What a cool attitude; What an inspiring gem. Don't miss the three dollar happy hour (3pm-6pm)! If I lived closer, it could be criminal.

I love Right Brain and the beer is good too. The atmosphere is good but usually loud and jam packed. Go in the summer when you can get seating outside at a table instead of inside. Sometimes, I cannot get the beer that I want because it's out -- that just ruins my day :) It's also really dark in here. I wouldn't say it's my favorite brewery in town but still a great place to go and hang out.

Great small-batch beer. BYO food. Plenty of tables and games and all ages before 9 pm make for a communal atmosphere more relaxing than a normal bar. I've enjoyed the Black "Eye" (PA), a double IPA, the Ned's Flanders, Girl Scout stout, and countless others. I look forward to multiple visits every time I'm in town, to try something new and flavorful, and get ideas for my own brews. Keep up the good work!

I wanted to check out all the breweries in Traverse City so I had to go to Right Brain. Location was kind of difficult to find in the dark and in an area I have never walked through. Once we were in we found a table. I was pretty surprised to find no table service whatsoever. Not a big deal for us and I'm not sure if that's an every day thing. Beers were pretty good. My favorite was the Magnum (I love hops). Tried a basil based and asparagus based beers. They matched their descriptions quite well and further solidified my hatred for veggie beers.

I'd go here again. One of the beers I got was a bit skunky... nothing some regular maintenance in the keg lines couldn't fix. Reminded my of the Corner Brewery in Ann Arbor too. Same type of crowd as well. That's to say, anyone and everyone is welcome.

I love the Bonaduce. My husband and I were so sad to see it wasn't on tap the week we were in Traverse this summer!! We'd been taking about this lovely ginger IPA for weeks leading up to our trip! Like other reviewers have said, therein lies the rub with a small brewery that likes to experiment. My first love was not there, but I did find other suitable beers to sustain my until the Bonaduce returns. The Spinal Tapper, Black "Eye" PA, and others filled in. They always have interesting brews, which helps make it a different experience each time. I love the vibe of this place. It's casual, people-focused, and always has great local art hanging on the walls. We even bought a couple of pieces the last time we were in town. I've seen people say its kind of hipster, and I can see that. However, each time I've been there I have seen people from every generation co-mingling happily. I thought I didn't like the fact that they did not serve food, but now I LOVE that they don't. One night I was able to get take out delivered from Xylo (in the same building...try the nachos), and the next night I felt like thai and brought Thai Cafe (down the street...wonderful). You can bring exactly what you're craving and find a brew to match. What could be better? This is my go-to brewery in Traverse City, and would be #1 for me if it were closer to home.

Very unique beer recipes. This is the most beatnik, bohemian brewery in town. only the most interesting, intelligent beer connesuirs should patronize this establishment. there's plenty of other water holes in town for most cretins to inebriate themselves at. don't taint this place with your mediocrity. And don't go here looking for a Miller/Bud Light. You should be beaten back to redneck-ville if you do.

One of my favorite places! The beer is great. A real artisan brew pub. If only they served food.

Well I'd heard good things from family about Right Brain, and was excited to try it out and use my $1 pint wooden nickles I received for running the meijer festival of races during the cherry festival. Unfortunately for me I'm not an avid beer drinker, but was glad to see on their website they had a cider. I went up to the bar after sitting at a table without service for a few minutes, asked for two pints of cider and an order of guacamole and chips. Imagine my surprise that a pint is not a pint in a traditional sense at Right Brain, and since my cider is a "premium" pour, it didn't count for my token price (the token says $1 pint, no fine print). I can understand that, so I inquired if I could receive a discount instead, even $1 off since the tokens were for $1 pints. The dark haired bartender behind the counter informed me that there was no button on the computer for that and since they don't brew the cider they can't give me any discount because they would be essentially giving it away. She even asked me if I understood. Yes, ma'am, I understand good customer service because I worked in retail for a decade and your customer service was severely sub par. If there is anything that turns me off to an establishment it is certainly argumentative customer service. I paid full price for two ciders and guacamole. I won't be going back. I can find overpriced cider at almost any brewery in town.

We were in town for a weekend getaway and stumbled upon Right Brain through some conversations with locals. Everyone said to check out this place. So we did. It's in a crafty location. Almost in what seems to be a communal building. It wasn't what I expected. First off, It's BYOF..?..What? Yeah, food. I don't know, but it works. What also works is the 14 evolving and revolving Tap beers from Sour ales to Porters. Try the Pollinator. It has a basil and honey flavor. Very unique and very drinkable. I wish we could've went back for a second day with my drinking shoes on or better yet maybe a sixer for the road... Hopefully soon. BarKeep Nate also backed a decision my GF and I had made earlier in the day about hitting up Frenchies. I felt at home drinking in their brewery... Some people call this place Hipster, They apparently haven't been to Chicago or New York. Hipster special is a $1 beer and a shot of whiskey. Go to Right Brain. It's beer easily beats Mackinaw and North Peak. No offense to those two establishments. Maybe bring a pastrami sandwich from Frenchies or a burger from Bubba's with you to eat.

Great beer, funky place. The outdoor area on a nice northern MI summer night is awesome, even if it does kind of face an alley-ish street. I tried both of the IPA selections on tap this weekend and was impressed with them both. My wife had whatever the red was and loved it as well. We hit Right Brain after going to the other two brewpubs in town and sadly I couldn't sample more beers as I'd had my fill after the two. Can't wait to come back.

A taste of Right Brain beers at the Michigan Brewer Guild's Summer Beer Fest 2009 made it impossible not to want to visit them in Traverse City. The beer is so unique and good. The staff and customers are wonderful. It is such a friendly place. It is one of the best breweries in Michigan, so make a point of going there on your next trip Up North.

Right Brain is somewhat tucked away from the main drag but definitely worth taking an extra few minutes to locate. The atmosphere is sort of like a coffee shop that serves beer...not at all the typical bar. Between my wife and I we tried 4 different beers (which were all at $3 happy hour prices...an added bonus). - bourbon stout: unique and delicious, my favorite of the bunch. They "age" the beer in a Woodford Reserve bourbon barrel. Now this might sound gimicky but the process really does add a hint of bourbon flavor to the beer, particularly at the beginning of your sip with a nice stout finish. - citral wheat : slightly more lemony essence than other wheat beers like Oberon but overall very pleasant and a nice summer beer. - will power pale ale: another solid beer, nicely hopped, a good choice for those who like the pale ale style but get overpowered by the hops of an IPA - TC 350 IPA: strong, tasty, overall very good. One of the better IPAs I've had lately. Because of their heavy hops character, some IPAs can become a little bit much after the first few sips, but not this one. Quite good from the first sip until the last. Overall Right Brain is a winner. I was sad to read on their website that distribution is limited to the brewery and a select few places around TC. I'm hoping to one day see Right Brain on tap around Ann Arbor but until then I'll definitely be back when traveling up north.

Went there on the recommendation of a friend. Got the sampler platter and got to pick 6 beers. Had two different IPA's, a stout, a porter, an ale and the asparagus beer...they were all great minus the asparagus one but had to try it why the hell not. Would convey that if you love crafted beers to check this place out...if you prefer cheap beers don't bother.

I am convinced that Right Brain has the best beer in the country, and I do not say that lightly. The beer menu is creative and ever-changing, the staff is friendly and fun, and the environment is very relaxed and inviting. You couldn't ask for anything more in a brewery.

We love this bar. Very relaxed & fun. Huge selection of great beer. We carry our Growler now whenever we head to TC to try something new. They had board games out if you want to hang out. Lots of comfy seating as well. I hear a new hotel is opening soon close by, so go now before it gets so popular that you have to wait to sit!

Really unique location, good beer, nice decor. The brewery is located in the Warehouse District, in a modest building that you wouldn't think would be the home of a brewery. When you first walk in, you see a salon, which initially confused me and made me think I wasn't in the right spot. However, you walk just past the salon and you are at Right Brain, a modern and welcoming atmosphere. There are probably approximately 12 beers on tap, a few with small batches that are changed up frequently. When I was there they had some sort of spicy pepper beer available, that I didn't have the guts to try. They do not serve food, but sell some snacks. If you are in the market for some of their merchandise, the prices are very reasonable. The employees are friendly and very knowledgeable about what they serve and all sorts of different beer. Right Brain always makes a splash at the Michigan Beer Festivals and the brewery I found to be just as impressive.

Amazing experience at Right Brain! They were doing tours of the brewery all day, keg bowling, and bomber mini-golf, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. The beer selection is outstanding-creative and tasty, and the food menu was unique and fun. Will visit again, and recommend to foodies, beer snobs, and people like to have fun!

Amazing beer! $15 for 6, 6 oz samples. The lavender beer was fantastic and the cherry pie beer is the best ever. We ate the turkey and avo waffle sandwich, it was small but full with turkey and flavor. The patio overlooks the lake and the mug club is awesome. I wish I lived closer to this brewery.

Still a huge space that is more popular with the tourists than the locals. As a local try some other places before seeking out Right Brain. Cause if its empty in the evening it says something about the place. The only time locals enjoy right brain is when the beer is on sale during happy hour. take away the discount and the crowds disappear too.
